The Cockleshell Gallery, situated in Duncannon's
Elizabethan Fort was opened in 1998 with the aim of promoting the arts
in this corner of the South East. Since it's inception the gallery,
formerly known as The Cockleshell Arts Centre, has proven it's ability
to produce quality exhibitions in the form of Paintings, Sculpture and
Photography. While our main arts scene is the visual arts we are also
involved with the performing arts. In 1998 this non profit
organisation introduced The Demon Drummers project to Duncannon with
the assistance of the Wexford County Council Arts department and W.O.R.D. We also introduced the now renowned International Sand
Sculpting Exhibition to Duncannon's blue flag beach. Our musical
involvement would be represented by an annual choral recital with
either Wexford Male Voice Choir or the New Ross Singers. It is also
planned to introduce more musically based workshops.
Our voluntary group endeavours to continue the promotion of the
arts by way of facilitating children's Art and Craft workshops, and
Art Classes for adults during the year. While in our formative years
our exhibitions were usually of a regional factor, but since our
restructuring a few years ago an external selection panel was formed
and they meet annually to select the exhibitions for the following
year. As a result of this process, our exhibitions are now of a more
national and sometimes even an international flavour.
In 2008 we celebrate our tenth anniversary, we hope to expand the
facility by way of extra workshops and courses. We have recently
upgraded our venue for the purpose of the further development of the
arts in the surrounding area.
Entry to the gallery is free, however all donations are gratefully
received
